50th Family Trip: The Beach, Part 1

Our first evening at the beach, the girls wanted to swim in the condo pools. Steve and I decided that since we were at the beach, we should swim in the ocean. We gathered up the girls and my nephew, Anthem, and drive to the section of beach we could see from our balcony.
This was the first time Rachel and Katherine had ever swum in the sea, and as soon as we walked onto the beach, they were delighted. No more grouching about not swimming in the pools. Because there is just something magical about wading into the ocean.

The water was very calm, with just the gentlest of waves. Steve showed the kids how to wade out and ride the swells back to shore. They were instantly hooked.
Katherine, who has often been fearful of water, had no fear at the beach. She swam and splashed, letting breakers roll over her and laughing over the feel of foam washing across her skin.

Rachel, of course, loved it all. She has always been a little fish, and the ocean proved again that what she really wants is to grow gills so she never has to come out of the water.

And Anthem, who had kept to himself for most of the trip, was open in his delight of playing in the surf,

I only waded along the shore that night, wanting to keep a close eye on everyone on this, their first beach trip. But I was more than content to watch and take pictures. The smell and sound of the sea was soothing and the joy of the swimmers was infectious. The beach at sunset is a gorgeous place to be.
