Katherine played her violin in church a couple of weeks ago. I realized that this was the 5th year she's performed at church!
She has played a lot this year - school orchestra, youth symphony, private lessons, music contest - and her skills have improved noticeably.
She always seems remarkably calm and confident when she plays. I certainly wouldn't have had the courage at 13 to stand up in front of an audience and play a long and complicated Bach piece unaccompanied. I love that Katherine is so willing to share her musical gifts with others.
She truly loves to play. She practices before school every morning during the school year. (And does so without ANY reminders from her parents!) This summer she has spent long hours playing as a way to stave off boredom. She is, however, relieved to finally be finished with the Bach piece she worked on for months. She happily admits that classical music is her favorite, but she is excited to play some different tunes.
For Katherine, the hardest part of performing is figuring out how to handle the applause and attention at the end. Granny made her promise to smile when she finished playing, and she did. Briefly. I love listening to my girl play and I can't wait to see where music will take her.
