The First Orchestra Concert

Katherine has been playing the violin since she was 8, but she has never had the chance to practice or perform with anyone else. Until now. She has been in orchestra class at school this year and it has been a learning experience! She was amazed at how bad beginning violin, viola, cello, and bass sounds. But she has waited more or less patiently as her classmates learned to hold their instruments and finger notes and use a bow. And now they can play actual songs. She still rolls her eyes at how basic the songs are, but she likes being part of a group of musicians and she loves to play.

Last night was Kate's first orchestra concert. It was actually an entire evening of music, involving all the orchestras from 5th grade through high school, so Katherine had the chance to see what her beginner classmates and she will someday become.
The 5th graders had memorized their pieces, so when it was their turn they marched to the front of the gym and played Frere Jacques and Ode to Joy without music.

Katherine played with confidence and pleasure, as always.

I looked around that gym full of "orchestra nerds" and their instruments and realized that my girl has found her Tribe!
