A Rachel and Mom Day

Steve and Katherine spent the day at an Odyssey of the Mind tournament, so Rachel and I had a day for just the two of us. Rae's choices of activities for the day were simple: shopping for spring clothes, eating Chinese food for lunch, and going to the botanical gardens. It was 70 degrees outside and spring is in the air, so this was a perfect list!

Rachel is not particularly interested in the plants or flowers at the botanical gardens, and she is pretty much oblivious to the beautifully planned garden architecture, but she adores the Children's Garden. Even without all the fountains and water features that are running in the summer it is a terrific place to play. And play she did!

It's still winter, so nothing is blooming in the gardens. That means we had the chance to admire the squirrels and all the sweet little sculptures.

And I had fun looking through my camera and noticing the subtle beauty of the little things.

After leaving the gardens, we made a spur-of-the-moment visit to the Keeper of the Plains, the huge Native American sculpture that is an icon of the city. The Keeper and the bridge that leads to it are fun to visit and so interesting to look at.

We came home with tired bodies and minds full of all the sights we'd seen. It was a perfect Rachel and Mom Day!
