Folk Art Museum

There are many art museums in Santa Fe, but we did not have much time and half of our group wasn't much interested. My mom and I did slip off to the International Museum of Folk Art and it was quite a treat! The museum has space for several temporary displays and then a giant gallery crammed with the most amazing collection of dolls, carvings, masks, tapestries, toys, and miniatures you have ever seen. The art works, all hand made and all from formally untrained artists, came from every country imaginable. The museum does a wonderful job of grouping similar art works in the same cases, so that beaded dolls from Africa slowly merge into beaded dolls from American Indians or giant scenes of market places include miniatures from many different collections. It was totally fascinating and a whole lot of fun! It was also the first museum I have ever been in that posted signs encouraging visitors to take photos!
