Cactus Love

We spent lots of time in the desert on our trip, so we saw a lot of cactus. No big surprise there! I know the names of common cacti - prickly pear, barrel, la cholla - but I have never been much of a fan of them. They are just too prickly and unexpected and painful. In Bandelier there were cactus everywhere, especially the tall, branching, jump-out-and-grab-you kind called la cholla. They were in bloom. Bright, pollen-dusted, glorious bloom. And I fell in love...

I'm not ready to plant cactus in my garden yet, but I have learned a new appreciation for them. And I would gladly go back and photograph those pollen coated bees and brilliant fuschia blooms any time!
