Woods and Sand

We went to the nature center today to look for bald eagles and play on the sandbar at the river.  As we hiked through the woods, we saw signs of beaver and lots and lots of deer tracks.
We also found this possum, well, playing possum.  The girls were just sure he was dead, but when we walked past that spot on the trail later, he had disappeared!
Eventually we reached the sandbar and its massive piles of driftwood.
Steve went off to look for eagles.  (He didn't find any, but we did see two bald eagles hanging around a pond on our way to the nature center.)  The girls and I were happy to just play on the "beach".

I was intrigued by animal tracks and shadows and wind.

I was totally fascinated by this broken stem of grass.  The wind had blown it along the sand in perfect circles, exactly the way I sometimes draw with a pencil and compass.
The girls had a grand time exploring fallen trees and piles of driftwood.

Wind and water, sand and trees, blue skies and my family.  My idea of a perfect winter morning.

This Is What Almost 10 Looks Like

It was a gorgeous day today - 65 degrees and sunny!  What a change from the minus two degrees we started the week with.  Katherine and I went for a long walk in the woods.
We investigated tree bark...
and bird nests...
...and mud.
But mostly we just talked.
About her upcoming birthday.
About the new school she will attend next year.
About how the boys at school, who are her closest friends, only want to talk about "boy stuff" and how she has less in common with them now.
Through it all, Kate climbed every log and fallen tree she could find.
I love her sense of adventure.
She is such an interesting, complex person.
This is what almost 10 is like and it's pretty cool.

Frozen Bubbles

Like much of the country, we are currently in the deep freeze.  It was cold here today.  As in -2 degrees when we went to school.  So Granny dreamed up the perfect frigid weather project - freezing bubbles.  She found a recipe (I don't know all the ingredients, but I do know it involved corn syrup...) and we showed up after school to try it out.  The results at a balmy 15 degrees?  Amazing!

The coolest bubbles ever!  Now to go thaw my fingers...

I love birthdays!
