Dragon Fruit

The girls and I went to the city today and met Robie for lunch.  We had some time to kill, so we went to a Vietnamese grocery store.  We had a lot of fun looking at strange candies and canned goods and stocked up on assorted rice noodles.  Best of all, we found this.
And what is THAT, you ask?  Why it's a dragon fruit.  We ate them in China and loved them.  I had never seen one for sale in the U.S., so we were delighted to find one!
Dragon fruit is possibly the coolest looking fruit ever.  On top of the weird, spiky, dragon-ish outside, the inside looks like this.
It tastes cool and sweet and has a mild flavor all it's own.  And I can't think of any other fruit that is black and white and hot pink!

We invited Granny and Poppy over for a little dragon fruit party to celebrate the tastes of China.
Yummy!

The Dresses

The girls wore their flower girl dresses to church this morning.  I figured they might as well get some use out of them and Katherine and Rachel were thrilled to wear them again.  They KNOW they look gorgeous in these dresses!
And of course we had to have some silly shots!

Beating the Heat

It was still 103 degrees out at 7:00 this evening.  So the girls decided that some sprinkler time was in order.
And with a salute to the Olympics there were cartwheel-like "tricks"
and "kung fu".  (I know - it's not an Olympic sport, but they don't know that.)
Ta-da!

Another Kind of Family Reunion

My cousin Dale lives in North Dakota.  His three boys live in New York, but spend their summers with him and he always tries to bring them to Kansas to see the relatives here.  Dale's oldest boy begged to see all of his cousins and to spend time with other relatives.  So Dale organized a family reunion in our town today.  His brother and family drove down.  His sister in California couldn't come, but she sent her kids.  All of his aunts and uncles and some of his cousins and their kids came.  We had a wonderful time.  The adults sat and talked and caught up on each other's lives.  The kids ran around and played and got to know one another.  My Aunt Sharon had all 7 of her grandchildren together for the first time ever.  My girls were glad to be around some kids.  Katherine entertained the littlest ones and was a good babysitter.  Rachel flirted with all of the older boys.  And Dale's boys were surrounded by family.  When they go back home they'll have memories of cousins and the fun we had and they'll know that we love them, even when they're far away.

Swimmers

The girls had their last session of swimming lessons today.  I'm glad to be done with hauling them to the pool and trying to find shade in 100 degree heat, but they would happily keep on swimming every day until it freezes.

Katherine has always been a cautious, rather fearful swimmer.  But not any more!
She has overcome her fears and learned to just jump in, because once the water is over your head, it doesn't matter if it is 5 feet or 25 feet deep.
She jumps in deep water.  She dives (sort of) from the side.  She swims multiple strokes.
She has turned into a true swimmer and she is one happy kid!
Rachel is a challenge to photograph at the pool, because this is what you see most of the time!
Her goal for swimming lessons is to spend as much time as possible underwater.
That and hanging out with the teachers in the hopes that they will take her out in the deep water.
Oh, and doing tricks with the dive toys.
One day the head instructor spent some time working with Rae and then told Steve "You have a fish!"  That would be true.  All she really wants is gills!

Little Ballerina

Rachel has been taking ballet classes the past few weeks.  Today was her final class and parents were invited to come and watch and take pictures.  So I did!  Rachel loved her ballet costume (too big slippers and all) and happily did everything the teacher asked, but it's clear that ballet is a bit too slow and sedate for this girl.  She sure did look cute, though!

I love birthdays!
