The Big Sale

I have a garage sale every summer to get rid of the mountains of stuff that seems to accumulate in my house - toys, endless stacks of clothes, and assorted other junk.  My Mom always hauls over her to-get-rid-of piles, too.  Always before, I have waited until late June or July to have the sale and then sweltered through 105 degree heat.  This year I finally got smart and had my sale the weekend after school let out.  That would be this weekend.  And the weather was lovely (although I nearly blew away this morning!).

Here we were near the beginning of the sale.  It's more than a little sobering to think that I get rid of more possessions every year than most people on earth own...   But I sell everything cheap (not a single item over $12) and most of it goes.  The remains, and there really are not all that many, will be hauled to the local thrift shop and donated.  None of this stuff will come back in my house.  And that makes me happy!
The girls set up a lemonade stand.  Katherine had been excited about this for weeks.  She had the sign carefully planned and had already decided where the proceeds would go (to Granny to buy more apps for the i-pad!).  But when the actual selling part rolled around, she could hardly look her customers in the eye.  It's just too much socializing for her.
Rachel, on the other hand, is a world-class salesperson.  As cars pulled up, she'd say "Oh goody, a customer!"  Then she'd walk up to people, flash her electric smile, and ask if they wanted some lemonade.  Most people fell for her.  And if they didn't she'd say "Just a little bit?".  That nearly always did the trick.

She insisted on serving the lemonade herself, even if it is a challenge to to so one-handed.  (Although she rarely dished out more than half a cup!)  She even made deliveries to people as they shopped.
Katherine happily stayed in the background and made change.  They haven't counted their haul yet, but I'm pretty sure it will buy lots of apps!
So, after a couple of mornings of selling, the big sale is over for the year.  I have a trunk load of junk to send on elsewhere and some tables to put away, but we're done.  And we are $326.30 richer!
