It's been six months since Rachel joined our family. It's hard to believe that half a year has passed! Six months ago today we flew to Guiyang, the lovely city where Rachel was living. On September 14th, we met 21 month old Chen Fu Shen in the Civil Affairs office. Her foster mother brought her in to us. The first picture is of Shen Shen and her foster mom in the first few moments that we saw her. Even with that buzz cut, she was beautiful. I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for that foster mother. This was her baby, the child she had raised, and she would leave her here and never see her again... Shen Shen quickly caught on that her foster mother, the only mama she knew, was going to leave her there. With us, a bunch of foreign strangers. She was angry and terrified. I can't really even begin to describe her cry. It was rage and anguish and terror, a deep primal cry. And she fought me with incredible strength. It took all my energy just to hold on to her. The second picture is of the first few moments I held her. We are both overwhelmed. Rachel cried and fought and grieved for about two hours. It was a hard, hard two hours. But, by evening she seemed to have accepted her fate. She started calling me "Mama". By morning, she was our Rae and she had claimed us as hers. The third picture was taken on September 15th, the morning after Gotcha Day. We were on our way back to the Civil Affairs office to officially adopt Rachel Fu Shen. I knew then that we were in for it! Rachel is such a delight. She is a happy, funny, determined little girl. She brightens our lives in a million different ways. I am so glad that she is ours. Here's to six beautiful months with Rachel Fu Shen and to a life time more.
